HAY 2000

Welcome to the Australian National Hang Gliding competition

Overall Scores

Day 1.

Windy weather made life difficult and dusty in an amazingly lush (for Hay) paddock. A straight line task to the north east, to a goal near Lake Cargelligo saw Joel Rebbechi win the day.

Day 2.

The windy weather slowed down so the towing was less dramatic, but the thermals were quieter as well. The task was another straight line flight, to hilston

Day 3.

A perfect day for towing! Nice breeze and clear skies with small cumulus. Everyone got going early and the paddock was empty by four o'clock. A flight to Booligal and then to Coolibah (in between Hilston and Lake Cargellico) was the go.

Day 4.

Another great towing day. We expected light southerly winds with good thermals, so 134 km to the north and then back part way. The southerly winds ended up stronger than hoped, and the headwind on the final leg saw no one made goal. On day 3, Trevor Kees, flying a 220 fun nearly made goal on a task that had a downwind leg first, but then a 100km croswind leg!

Day 5.

More good weather. The forecast was for light northerlies. A southerly leg and a southeast leg, finishing at Sportavia Soaring Center at Tocumwal was called, but the wind turned out to be north east, turning further east down the task The final leg was again headwind, but the seven pilots made it.

Day 6.

Yet another great day. 10000' base and light winds forecast. The task committee takes the soft option and calls a 115 km trip, but then over development along the course slows things down and only 25 make goal (including Trevor Kees in the 220).

Day 7.

High base, light wind, but the chance of overdevelopment meant a 150 km task south, then south east. The clouds did build up and some showers and occasional thunder resulted, however a strong and unexpected southeast wind kicked in later in the day and stopped anyone making the goal.

Day 8.

Thunderstorms are predicted, but the day produces only some small cumulus clouds. A downwind task to Yanga Lake is again upset by the mysterious southeast wind that again comes in yet again, in the afternoon.

Day 9.

The day starts out very well with good conditions and a task to a goal southwest of Yanga Lake, but not long after pilots get going, one of the pilots encounters a dust devil immediately after launch and is seriously injured. The window is closed and eventually after some delay, the task is cancelled.

Day 10.

Final day of the competition. Another great day, high cloudbase and an easterly wind meant a race to Yanga lake.
